MSO Brochure

MSO first produced a brochure extolling the virtues of Masters Swimming in 1994. It is printed on heavy card stock and includes a multi colour graphic and 3 black and white pictures. The brochure is printed on 8.5 by 11 inch paper in landscape orientation and can be folded twice to produce a finished size of 8.5 by 3.6 inches. In this shape it is ideal for displaying in a rack near the pool office or 2 brochures can be left flat and displayed on a bulletin board. The brochure is available from the registrar. We hope that you will request a batch of brochures today and use them to entice new members.

Why Masters Swimming ?

Regular exercise contributes to good health and a sense of general well-being, and swimming is considered by health professionals to be one of the best and safest ways to exercise. It benefits the cardiovascular system, reduces cholesterol, and has a positive effect on weight control, muscle tone, stress levels, and stamina. It also helps to offset the gradual decrease in bone mass that occurs with age. Unlike many other sports, swimming does not involve the purchase of costly equipment or clothing.

Membership in a Masters swim club provides an opportunity not only to get fit, but to meet new people, make new friends, compete and travel. Masters Swimming adds fun and friendship to fitness !

Do I Have to Compete ?

Whether to compete is up to the individual. Swimmers have their own reason for joining a Masters club. For those who wish, there is the challenge of competing against others in their own age category. Meets provide the opportunity to socialize with swimmers from other clubs and to exchange ideas on swimming and everything else under the sun !

There are also different ways to compete - you can pit yourself against other swimmers or simply focus on your own satisfaction : improving your "personal best" times ! Fellow competitors often applaud less proficient participants who complete what is for them an arduous event.

What are the Benefits of a Masters Swim Club ?

A Masters swim club provides members with an opportunity to improve their physical fitness, receive regular coaching and stroke improvement, attend swim meets and swim clinics, and participate in social activities. Swimmers are covered by an MSO insurance policy during work-outs and sanctioned swim meets.

What are Swim Club Activities ?

The provision of specific activities is up to the individual club, and members can participate to whatever extent they choose. Most clubs offer some or all of the following :
  • regular, concentrated workouts
  • club socials
  • light weight training
  • swim meets
  • club newsletter
  • triathlon support
  • swim clinics
  • flexibility training
  • demonstrations of team spirit !

What is it ?

Masters Swimming is a successful blend of fitness and competitive swimming for adults. The objectives are fun, fitness, friendship and participation ! Those who find it difficult to stick to a self-imposed keep-fit routine will find it easier to stick with a Masters Swimming programme.

Who can join ?

In Canada, any person(*) 18 years of age or older, with no upper age limit, can join. There are over 6000 Canadian Masters Swimmers, with more than 2000 in Ontario alone.
*not participating in age group competitions

What is the cost ?

The cost of joining a Masters club varies, depending on the cost of pool time, number of workouts per week, number of coaches, and the activities and services offered.
