The Sun City Swim is Orillia’s annual 4 km charity swim across Lake Couchiching. Beginning at Fern Resort at 8 a.m., the swim takes participants across the lake and to the finish line at Couchiching Beach Park.
Each swimmer is required to provide a personal, non-motorized safety boat (i.e. canoe, kayak, etc.)to accompany them through the race. All swimmers participating in this year’s Sun City Swim must be at Fern Resort for a 7 a.m. registration on Saturday, August 8, 2009.
This year, the Sun City Swim will be making a difference close to home. All fund’s raised from this year’s swim will benefit Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Foundation, a passionate team dedicated to improving community healthcare through the support of equipment and education programs at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital.
This year hundreds will be up for the challenge, but one will go the extra mile. After participating in the annual Sun City Swim for over five years, swimmer TatumHaslem decided that the 4 km trek across Lake Couchiching was not enough. This year, in conjunction with the Sun City Swim, Tatum will be doing an around the lake swim - a total of 35 km. She will begin her swim at Couchiching Beach Park the evening of Friday, August 7, 2009. Timed at approximately 24 hours, Tatum’s hope is to finish her ‘around the lake’ swim alongside the swimmers in the ‘across the lake swim.’
