The MSO Club Survey - Autumn 1996

The Membership Committee tried to find out some details of our Clubs.

Total number of clubs = 81 ... Total number of clubs responding = 28

1. Workouts (All 81 clubs included)

The clubs offered between 1 and 9 hours per week of workout time. The average is 4 hours per week. Workouts range from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours

Fees range from $0 to $52/month or $624 per year. The average fee is $22/month or $264 per year. Fees may be paid for the entire year, for 9/10 months of the year (workouts discontinued through the summer), 4 month blocks or monthly. There is also an example of different fee schedule depending on the number of workouts attended per week.

4. Pool Costs.

Pool costs ranged from $17 to $100 per hour, averaging $41 per hour.

5. Coaching.

Coaches worked between 2 and 8.5 hours per week, averaging 5.25 hours per week.

Coaches were paid between $10 and $40 per hour, averaging $20 per hour. One club offers a Y membership in addition to pay.

6. Swim Meets.

Six clubs paid between $20 and $250 for relays per year. Relay entries are prepared as follows

Clubs reported that between 2 and 50 swimmers compete at least once a year, with the average weighing in at 16.

7. Membership.

Reasons for leaving a club ranked as follows

  4. Change (job / sport / lifestyle)

  • Workouts too hard or too easy or too much I.M.

  • Poor coaching or no coaching

8. Socializing and Meeting.

Clubs responded that they hosted between 0 and 8 parties a year, averaging 2.68 per club per year.

Informal outings varied between 0 and 12 per month, averaging 3.36 per club per month.

Open meetings were held between 0 and 11 times per year, averaging 4.2 per year.

9. Internet Access

50 % of clubs responding have internet and email access
