Notice to Swimmers Preparation for 2017 World-level Competitions
There will be two World-level Masters competitions in 2017. The World Masters Games in Auckland are April 21-30, and the FINA World Masters Championships in Budapest in August.
You and your club may be planning to attend one or both of these events under your club banner. If so we encourage you to do so. However, if your club numbers are insufficient to provide you an opportunity to compete on relays, and you wish to do so, then TOMS – The Ontario Masters SwimClub, can provide that opportunity.
TOMS was formed in 2002 to increase the social experiences at these events and to provide relay opportunities where there are insufficient numbers under the local club banner. MSO’s communications and planning for these events have meant that swimmers know who else is going making it easier for get-togethers during the event, regardless of the team banner.
Registration for World Masters Games has opened and we expect FINA registration to open soon. As a swimmer, you must decide on your “Club” for Worlds BEFORE you register, be it with your home club, or with TOMS. Once registered for Worlds, it would be preferable not to switch club affiliation. You cannot change clubs once registration for Worlds closes.
You can still continue to swim for your local club, including nationals for example, even though you have registered with TOMS for Worlds. Just prior to going to Worlds you should request that the MSO Liaison and your club registrar formally transfer your membership to TOMS for the duration of the event. Once transferred in the MSO Registration System, both the verification of MSO/MSC membership and the on-line membership card (currently in development) will reflect this.
FINA rules require that all swimmers represent a club and does not recognize the “unattached” affiliation. If you are an “unattached” swimmers, please be aware that MSO automatically registers you with TOMS each year. Ontario no longer uses the UNON designation. TOMS is a registered club with MSO.
If you have any questions, please contact Chris Smith, firstname.lastname@example.org or 416 444-1885, who is currently acting as MSO Liaison for TOMS and others attending these World events. He will keep a list of any clubs and swimmers intending to go to these events and consider opportunities to coordinate social opportunities during the event. For those planning to swim under the TOMS banner, he will coordinate TOMS relays.
