May 30, 2019
To: MSO Clubs and Swimmers
After this notice was drafted, MSO received many enquiries about the meaning of a May 29th letter from Swim Canada/Swim Ontario. There is no impact on MSO or its operations.
For over 40 years, MSO has lead and supported masters swimming. MSO has operated on its own since MSC’s and SO’s 2017 decision to end our longstanding relationship. MSO is not a special interest group of any other organization. We are a masters organization operating at low cost and focused solely on serving adult swimmers 18 years and over. Our member clubs are not a source of revenue; they are our partners in delivering that service. Whatever your swimming goals, there is only one class of swimmer at MSO – you are a “swimmer”.
Now back to our notice….
The pool season has largely wrapped up for 2018-2019. We had a very successful season that started with the 2nd MSO Symposium and continued with 14 local swim meets. MSO membership has increased slightly while meet attendance was generally softer. However, we have noted a similar broad trend in other provinces and at US Masters meets.
MSO’s Provincials was quite strong with some 450 swimmers; the third largest meet in Canada. Sincere thanks to our host Thornhill Masters. Thank you to all the swimmers and clubs that supported our Provincial Championship and to all who attended the Townhall. We heard swimmers express their desire for constructive dialogue on the future of masters swimming and we have communicated MSO’s willingness to engage anytime in discussions on that issue. A summary of the Townhall will be posted when complete.
SAVE THE DATES
For the summer, MSO is working with Canaqua Sports to sanction the MSO Provincial OWS Championship on August 11th at Welland. The meet package will provide clear details on wetsuit usage and the results will be entered into the MSO database.
MSO is pleased to announce the 2020 MSO Provincial Champion on March 27-29 at Nepean. SAVE THOSE DATES while we work on the details.
On May 23rd your Board reviewed the budget for the coming year and approved a modest fee increase for 2019-2020. MSO Boards consciously operated on deficit budgets since 2011-2012. Your current Board has decided that it is time to aim for more balanced budgets.
Club Affiliation fee (unchanged) $45.00
Swimmer fee $12.00 (increase of $2)
Coach fee (unchanged) No Fee
Single Event Registration Fees
Single day event $ 6.00 (increase of $1)
Provincials $12.00 (increase of $2)
And finally, the first order of MSO running caps (tech fibers) and MSO shirts is in. All orders will be mailed out when they arrive. We are planning having some teamwear at the MSO OWS Provincials in Welland. Stay tuned.
